Ride the waves...Be a buffalo

Updated: Jul 31, 2022

During a much-needed vacation in San Diego (my happy place) I took my kids boogie-boarding. It was so much fun, and such a delight watching them run in and out of the water and maneuver the waves.

At one point, my 8-year-old daughter turned to me and said, "Now it's your turn!" I didn't need much prompting to get me into the strong ocean water.

As she was trying to "teach me" how to boogie-board, she said, "All you've got to do is ride the wave."

The simplicity of her sentence struck me, and got me thinking about life. The challenges and difficulties that are bound to come up are like stormy waves ... and we just need to ride it. When we fight the wave, we just get sucked under. If we can 'go with it,' it'll pass much quicker.

In one of my life-coaching classes, a classmate of mine shared the following metaphor: Cows run away from the storm while the buffalo charges toward it – and gets through it quicker. The cow that's running away (the imagery makes me laugh!) gets overtaken by the storm which is traveling at a much faster speed, whereas the buffalo that runs into the storm actually overcomes it much faster and the storm moves over the buffalo and goes onward.

Whenever you're confronted with a tough challenge, do not prolong the torment, become the buffalo.

When you're threatened by a crashing wave, ride it. There's calmness after it passes.
